Siege Weapon FAQ and Worksheet!
daoc.djswifty.com

More than you probably ever wanted to know about siege weapons.

The FAQ contains everything I've learned about siege weapons, much of it during my last few months of lurking here (with limited hands-on experience). It started as a humble how-to for the guild and somehow evolved into a comprehensive guide. The basics of construction and operation, tactical suggestions, bugs to work around, I tried to cover all the bases.

The Worksheet contains recipes, component weights, and costs... another guild project gone awry. The Excel version should print nicely for quick reference. I wish I could get a PDF version for those without Excel, I'll work on it if there's demand.

This is very much a work in progress, so please feel free to email me feedback if you wish. My siegecraft is only 8, so I'm sure a lot of you have better ideas on how these things work. I wasn't able to verify all this stuff personally, so if you catch any errors then an email is welcome.

I hope some people find it useful!

Nice FAQ, I'm going to refer all of my guild to it so I can stop trying to explain siegecraft in chat :)

Just one correction I can think of.... you can /salvage siege weapons. It takes forever because the salvage timer is based on the number of materials you get back (try salvaging any item in your favorite craft that returns 3 or 4 leather/bars/wood and then an item that returns 20 or so and you'll see what I mean). In practice, for the not very large value of wood it returns, salvage really isn't worth the time and effort. Like you said, you get the same amount when the weapon naturally decays, so if you're still nearby just pick it up then.

Wow, awesome job on the FAQ and Siege worksheets. I'll be spreading around the links and word of the page :)

Re: Siege Weapon FAQ and Worksheet!
Found some "bugs" in your FAQ btw :)

1) Catapults cannot damage doors, only Ballistas can.
2) Ballistas use LoS targetting, not ground targetting.
3) The [LOAD] button is not a useless vestige. You have to use it for ballitas and catapults, after you have dropped the ammo unit onto the siege weapon.

Also, on the worksheet, i'm pretty sure that the three types of wood have different weights per board. Erego, each diff type of siege engine (elm/oak/ironwood) will have a different weight for the stacks of wood. Might wanna check that out :)

All in all tho, excellent work.

Re: Siege Weapon FAQ and Worksheet!
Thanks for the praise and bug reports! I'll be fixing them up this weekend. Since quite a few people thought my FAQ was too... well, in-depth... I'm creating a one-page siegecraft guide with just the vital information. I just uploaded a beta version of it, mostly dealing with rams, since those seem to be the most commonly used.

Quote:
you can /salvage siege weapons

So it does eventually finish, eh? I'll note that down as "possible, but probably not worth the time".

SaucyWench McWenchy (*chuckle*):
I've never tried to hit a keep door with 'em (seems sorta silly when you could be using rams), but I swear I've fired off catapults without using /load. Maybe it depends on the time you drop the stone in. Or maybe I'm just crazy. :lol I'll look into it soon, preferably in a setting OTHER than keep defense.

If there is no ammo on the catapult, dropping a stone in automatically loads it.

That being said, there's really no reason to use the load button, as having more than one piece of ammo in the catapult tends to make it buggy -- eventually you get ammo that you can neither load nor fire.

Hrm, i used the [Load] button and it worked fine, and i think i recall messages telling me that i needed to load ammo before firing (after i had dropped the stone onto the treb). Next time i'm wailing on the poor trolls at bledmeer i'll check up on it :)

Re: Siege Weapon FAQ and Worksheet!
all wood weighs 5 pounds per 20 pieces. It does not change per wood type.

Here is a question I'd like to see in the faq. =)

You mention ballistas are great for destroying rams. How do you target the ram from inside the keep if ballistas require LOS?

And

What are some examples of situation and placement for using the three seige weapons? (rams are easy, I see some defensive uses of catapults, but I don't see any reason I'd use a ballista)

Ballistas have a small radius of focused splash damage. You would usually use them in Offensive attacks on keeps (to whale on the doors and keep defenders who're repairing the doors in pain). You can also use them in defense (target the inner door and do splash damage on attackers). And yes, you can target teh inner door when defending, and not deal damage to it, and only do splash damage.

Re: Siege Weapon FAQ and Worksheet!
FAQ version 1.5 released, now with more data on the operation of catapults and ballistae.

PDF version of the worksheet now online, thanks to the *several* people who took the time to make a copy for me!

Now featuring Quick Guide 1.0, a one-page 90-second version of the FAQ, hopefully all the "vital" information is there for those new to siege, but it's short enough for EVERYONE to read/print for reference.

Still collecting data, updating, compiling a bug list...
----------
To answer a few questions here...

-I've noticed sometimes a /load is required if you adjust your aim. But if you drag the stone during the 30 seconds it's /arming, it's not needed.

-If rams are too close to the door, you can target them from the other side and deal direct damage. I've never personally tried it with a ballista, but it should work. Typically I'd already have a couple trebuchets going by that point though ;)

-Still working on damage comparisons, but catapults definitely do more AE damage than ballistae.
