The new Seige
New seige engine changes on Pen will fundamentally change seige and keep defense/taking.

My 50 aug healer with Lifter 4 easily carried 2 trebs and 380 rounds of ammo into the field, non-encumbered. Virtually any high level troll or strong character will be able to tote a treb into combat by themselves. All pieces are exactly half weight of previous. Mules parked in keeps and relic keeps with 4 engines and 160 rounds will be more commonplace.

/Groundassist again! Woot! THANK YOU!

Stackable ammo is delightful, but you have to spread it out in your backpack to load - no loading stacks of 20. Not a complaint, just an extra step I was not used too.

Timing for ARM was sweet. I can nomrmally double-barrel trebs (operate 2 at once), and with a 15 second reload it was a challenge. Normally the trebs were waiting on me instead of the otherway around. Now Load seems to take a long time. )))

Damage seemed unaffected for Trebs. Same damage I was used too.

New decay is WONDERFUL!!!!!! I eneded up walking away from some of my test trebs. You don't feel compelled to repair every other arming. If this holds true with rams as well, it will be a welcome change.

Copied my fletcher henchman to Pen to try out ballistae, but going to be hard to test against other seige unless I can hook up with another realm member to test. If any Pen albs or hibs read, would sure appreciate if we cold get together at some remote spot and both learn agaisnt each other's equipment. I don't imagine I can actually double-barrel ballista as easily anymore with only a 10 second ARM, but will certainly try.

As to the effect on the game.....my thoughts would be mere speculation compared to you folks knowledge. Part of me desperatly wants to see people realize what combined artillery is capable of doing. If those 10 people defending a keep and expecting doom only knew that they could hold an army of 100 off the doors with 10 artillery in concert. Another part of me worries that seige gets so easy everyone is carrying around one like a crossbow. Not sure if my feelings are based from jealously for being a somewhat uncommon seigemaster about to lose my uniqueness or from a real worry about seige engines dominating the game.

In the end, an example probably best speaks to me on this. At a ballista seige class in Gna Faste for my alliance, a level 30 walked up to us, as many do when you have a dozen engines on the field dueling. He asked "I've never seenone of those! How did you guys get them here from Emain or Bled?"

Given his reponse and astounding lack of basic knowledge in a game where knowing the exact style chain, High Lord pull pattern or max resist formula are the norm, I am supportive of the changes for the game in general. I can get over any petty jealousy for such a game improvement. ))

Talk to you after the ballista. Thank you for the forum here to share opinions without vault venom.

Where's the jibberish?

Good to see folks teaching others how to siege.

Looks like useful information to me..... if you really really want me to delete the thread I will, but I can't see a good reason for it.

the new seige
ok, then perhaps best stick to facts and not my philosophy dribble.

New ammo is craftable under Seige Skill recipies. All catapult ammo takes 27 iron bars, stones level 10, bullets, grapeshot and ice balls level 18. They are "level 50" items, but none can be enchanted. All stack normally (20). Ammo weight seems way too low now, stacks of 20 were only weighing in at 3 points only.
Ballista bolts are 7 elm, 15 iron (or close to that) and level 10, same notes as above.

You do get a quality level now. Perhaps we can horde our masterpiece catapult stones for those critical first shots )

Ammo Delve
Keep forgetting to note the delve change.

All the ammo cons Yellow at 49 and is a level 50 item. It delves to reveal radius, damage type and range although they are probably inaccurate (range is for sure - 2500 is listed, range for the top end is 3500).

They don't give a damage value - it's siege dependant not level dependent.

The radius information is correct.
Bolt/Stone/Ball o'Ice: 350
Grapeshot: 700
Bullet: 100

Most of the damage looks to be Heat which is more realm neutral than making it crush or pierce (the realistic damage types). I could see it changed to Body or Matter with new ammo.

Re: the new seige
Will quality on catapult stones actually affect damage? Or will it be like quality on arrows? My guess is that it would be like arrows and qual makes no difference....(if it did, you have the whole stacking issue...i.e. can you stack different qual stones, does the last one added overwrite the ones below it on the stact, etc...)

Quality from Ammo
It will probably ignore quality since siege effects are basically spells cast by the ground. The ammo just picks which spell. The effect ignores most of the equations which make quality matter in weapon attacks.

Quality doesn't count
Like arrows and any other item that's stackable, quality does not matter. If it did it wouldn't be stackable.

Crafting Ammo questions
Does seige ammo require a forge to make? Also, how long does it take to make? Just curious if I could stand next to the metal merchant and make a new catapult stone while the treb arms itself.

Siege Ammo
Ammo are items from siegecrafting. Siegecrafting requires no forge tool. It does require the wood plane, smih hammer and sewing kit. The arm timer on the catapult is about the same as the craft timer but with all the messing around your rate of fire would drop from optimal if you were crafting the ammo as you went.

Ammo is super light (compared to before) so you're better off making and carrying around large quantities of the ammo.

Re: Siege Ammo
Catapult ammo is now 8 rounds per pound of weight. Also, catapults now weigh LESS than a ram. That's right, a catapult including the 600 wood weighs 194. A ram with it's 300 wood weighs 200. No idea on ballistae, but I'd guess that they're also under 200.

segecrafting ammo in 1.60?
The patch notes do not indicate the crafting of seige ammo. Did it go in with the patch?

While I hate to make the time and effort making 45 in seigecraft the old way wasted time and effort, quite frankly ANYTHING that gets more people understanding the power of seige is good. Even if it is any fool with 20 gold and 20 minutes to hit level 68.

One of the saving graces of seigecraft has been the dude DF babies didn't care to learn it, so most any treb or particularly ballista operator you ran into in a battle tended to be a nice person capable of thoughtful conversation. <shrugs>

Crafted Ammo
I don't recall crafted ammo ever making the patch notes so I'm not surprised it didn't make the final notes. 1.60e had a note about fixing the recipes (they weren't opening), but craftable ammo was never officially in the notes.

Should be there.

Re: Crafted Ammo
Yeah it's in.

I keep asking them to let me look at the patch notes before they go live but Noooooooooooo... heh.

Side note... The fact that I'm starting to hear complaints about the siege updates is making me happy.

Complaints like: "They had at least half the amount of people that we did... but then they made three of those catapult type thingies (trebuchets) and started to slaughter everyone in the keep... WTF?"

Those type of complaints make me happy. =)

Re: New Siege
Should seige be able to hit people inside the lord room now? A long time ago I tried using a trebuchet to clean out the keep from people using PBAOE on the stairs but I kept getting misses even though I set my elevation.

Re: New Siege
Yes, I target the tower and sub levels frequently in keep seiges. The stairs are quite tricky to target though. If defenders deploy on the stairs you almost have to have a spotter & /groundassist to get them.
