I see the level of the mob posted on various "Beastiary" sites, and was wondering how you determine this?

Just by the color coding, or the various strategey guides that have been published.

My point is how do those published sites arrive at the level of the mob

Anything purple or above gives me no indication of it's level.

Capping on spells, for the most part.

One prime example is the Necromancer power tap, which caps at the monster's level.

So if you powertap something and get 71 power back, you know it's lvl71.

Simple as that wink

The Prima guide also seems fairly accurate. Some people go by that as well.

The Prima guide is fairly accurate according to the documentation provided by Mythic im sure.

One thing to remember is that almost all mobs vary in level when they spawn.

exactly what was said. Simply casting spells repeatedly while a tank engages in full block/taunts (usually shield/sword) until a spell lands to determine level.

Another method used for high con non-named mobs is to have a minstrel suicide charm it (i.e. charm it for about .5 seconds to see its level before the charm breaks and it decapitates the minstrel).

The MOB level can be obtained if you are astute enough to look at the memory for the game.dll process. Things like DToC (but not LToC) and as someone else mentioned the other idiotic radar programs. Get yourself a hex or memory editor and you'll be able to find em as well.

I don't wanna be a EULA-nazi but suggesting that someone intercept packets or look at memory states on the DAoC client is against the EULA under this fine print:

"D. Rights to Access System and Game Content to Play Game; No Interception or Reverse Engineering; Violation of EUALA a Material Breach"

Remember, this is the vault, where you get banned for even "thinking" about a hex editor, much less suggesting using 3rd party dirty cheating apparatus.

I'm sorry but it's my computer :/. I can do what ever I want once it resides ON MY COMPUTER. It doesn't break the EULA. I don't cheat at any rate any way. I'm tired of the lame radar users and the lame autohunters. I'm a programmer and it's not trivial to do but it's not hard. No where in the EULA can they specify that I can't do anything once something has reached my computer and it's memory.

And I don't mean to hijack this thread but he/she asked how people knew the level of MoB's. How the heck do you think the strategy guide got the numbers?

[Edit] bah, nm.

When I mob map I specifically use my Necro since the power-tap is limited to mob level.

Can take quite a while ot get the big ones since they tend to slaughter me after 4 spells have been resisted. grin

So your saying the higher the mob the more your powertap hits for? Or is it a reverse math thing? Powertap delve - Damagedone = mob level?

It's capped at the monster's level, simple as that.

You land a power tap on a lvl51 mob, you get 51 power back.
You land a power tap on a lvl3 mob, you get 3 power back.

Comprende?
