Yes it will strike stealthed targets. I volley ramparts in seiges to prevent rival archers from setting up. I also volley mg's around bait. Funny to watch Assasins runnign around like a chicken with their head chopped off.

Great post, Trimen! You word everything beautifully!

a couple points:

**A few people were wondering about not getting RPs for your kills when volleying from long range. In my [extensive] experience volleying portal and border keeps, I have discovered that kills from beyond 5,000 units do not grant realm points, though you still get a satisfying kill spam. For instance, firing into Svasud Faste from far enough away that you don't get roasted [at least 9,000 units I think] will net you tons of spam but zero realm points. Fortunately, plenty of people will come out looking for you, and who cares about realm points anyway?

This range limit is too bad, although Mythic probably added this to prevent cheapness, because often the best place to volley is one that is beyond 5,000 units away. Everyone knows that when attacking Bledmeer, you stand to the west of the zone-wall ridge and lob your shots into the lord room! But no realm points.. At least you're doing your part to help the realm, and I'll still do it, even if I don't get points for it!

***Has anyone else tried volley with level 10 braggart's bow? It takes the harrassment factor of volley to a new level. Hitting 60+ targets, about 3 times in 5 seconds, can seem very harrowing to a zerg and often cause them to scatter and retreat.

***Another volleying trick I have learned: If you are not careful and do manage to hit a "smart" guard, you can very often survive by just halting everything you are doing and then engaging him when he comes (assuming you are a scout). After about 20 seconds he will just walk away, and you will be fine (unless the fg of mids/hibs that is following him to your location gets you)

***On our server, we sometimes go to MPK in emain and have one archer stand in plain view, volleying the groups buffing/grouping in front of it. The archer's group waits behind the archer, out of clip range, and rushes in to mez the people that charge. This is great because it gets people to attack before they're ready, breaking their lines. This works in many other situations, like when people are resting after a battle, but works the most consistently at MPK/APK/HPK because often people will even charge you with their bots!

happy hunting!

I have never been too far to not get RP's but I have been too far to get XP. A problem with Fools bow is I went on a bot planking spree to level it. I got 20k rps but no Fools bow XP. : ( . FYI There are named merchants in pks which do not give xp or rps and they can be 1 shotted. The port neck merchants death looks like a player but they are worth nothing. Also the Port Ceromony master caster can be killed.

I am a ranger no engage here :P

I have taken Shades with me on several occasions. I have the luris stand in my polygons to surprise who ever comes for me. The onyl problem with this is that if you are volleyign from behind a PK they have a short run to get within th Master nukers field of fire. if you can't CC them then can easily escape. A hair trigger ally who chases can be very detrimental. Taking non-stealthers with you can be bad.

I want to one day setup and volley a pk with other volley raners firign on the same coords. That would be the ultimate in terror.

The funniest thing you can do is bring a couple of trebs have Shades fire the trebs while you volley. Decimiate bots easily but trebs give away location. They can bee seen well beyond normal. Me and my once guild master Finestab, took a treb to APK emain hide it behind a tree and killed a few bots. Of course it's hard to fully hide a treb.

Hey, what if ya used the cata to start with, but left it there to die after you kill the first set of bots. Afterwards use the cata as bait/distraction.

Bait: Set yourself up near the cata and pop whoever decides to scope it out. Enemy stealther's might be a problem though.

Distraction: Set up at another point away from cata and use volley... they'll more than likely check the cata first .

Hehe, dunno how good these ideas will work in actual combat... but hey as long as they work in theory we'll be ok!

Arrow types

I just got volley on a 50 Hunter on Mordred - was wondering about couple of things - there is a max and min range to volley but can you reduce the minimum range by using a different type ? and can you use volley to defend from the lords room in a keep defense? ie after they have taken the first door and are working on the second there are to target areas, one just inside the first door and directly in front of the second - - I will be trying out my new skill and maybe even more so with new Frontiers

Lord room D, use short range Arrows and the shortest range bow you can find ( Hibernia is the Heavy Recurve). Also bear in mind volley AE is something like 350 Radial units. You can set gt 300 range from door and hit the people trying to break it down. plus you will catch a few healers by surprise.

Unfortunately, Volley as we know it will no longer exist once Frontiers hits. (if the chages go in without change). I notice everyone screaming that archers are getting tons of love cause Volley is now free.....but not only do you now have to spec for it, but the range got totally crippled ( i believe new max range on Volley is now 1750 units..less than max range on a hunter)

Also, not sure if this has gone live on Pendragon, but there's also the thing about volley not working through roofs (which in all honesty is more realistic). So after frontiers go live, Volley's only use realistically is gonna be in Keep defence and to a lesser degree keep offence. Try using it out in the open anywhere else and you are in visible range now and as such, are susceptible to counterattack. Not too sure what the new Milegates are gonna look like but perhaps there may be some application there as well.

Border Keep Bombardment: Patch 1.65 removed the ability to Fire into Border Keeps
I cant find in the 1.65 notes where this was noted. Also Border Keeps are very much a viable target for volley and quite fun. I know the frustaration level of Albs on Merlin has increased .

There are alot of typo's in the current notes of Volley as to frequency and range, so I am believing that since Mythic hasn't changed the notation that they have followed along with the same guide lines as before. But I am writing a feedback just to make sure.

I will need to test the new volley before I can amend my guide. in 1.65 you can no longer place GT inside a Border Keep. They way it looks now, spec volley will be relegated to pure Castle defense as the inablity to hit covered targets compounded with the drastically reduces range, pretty much negates offesive seige effectiveness. Attacking from the low ground means to hit wall defenders on the new high walls you have to get well within line of sight, vs the current hidding behind the front line fighters.

Never ever shoot around the front doors of a pk. There are 2 non-realm guards there, these were palces there to kill PVE mobs when they got close to the PK Realm guards only attack players. With practice you will learn where it is safe to shoto and where it is dangerous.

I am still assessing volley in New Frontiers it's really buggy in favor of the archer.
