Testing - Info I wish I knew when I started! 01/08/04 1:23 PM
Well, there is a lot of BS that gets tossed about these forums. So, I did some testing that should clarify to mysteries that have been bugging me.

1) The ally is not a better pet than the compatriot

Ally - 1100HPs when I am level 45
Comp - 1400HPs when I am level 45

Ally - Very little damage done
Comp - Much more damage done, almost double the Ally

Ally - Has heals for when you are low on health and a 4HP HoT
Comp - Has a caster shield

So, if you are worried about dying in a group and need those backup heals. Use the ally.
But, if you just want a good pet for tanking or FPing USE THE COMPATRIOT. Anyone who tells you that the ally has more HPs is lying through their teeth.

****************************************

Secondly, since most ToA staves have a Focus to All Spell Lines and I frequently need to solo with my pet, I asked myself what is the BEST heal spell to use.

If you spec enchancements, use the best heal you have that is under your spec in enhancements. I have about 11 enh so I use a very low level heal that heals everytime for 91HPs. The best heal heals for about 290HPs. But when you look at it as HP/power usage.

Help Ally Heals 91HP / 7 Power* = 13HP/P
Succor Ally Heals 270HP / 28 Power 9.6HP/P

* I ignored the 20% savings for this spell, but it only further proves the point.

You may need to do your own testing but if you want to save power, use the lower level heals... you may have to cast 10 times but at least you are saving tons of mana. Also be wary because as you use higher level spells they become more inefficient in healing your pet. Sure, they are faster, but they suck you dry. Rather spend that power in more PBAEs.

For myself to heal the compatriot, it would take 145 power using big heals (succor) or 92 power using smaller heals (help). This also doesn't include the fact that the big heals are wildly variable with low spec (anyway from 190 to 300 or so) and therefore, you will waste mana with overhealing. The Help Ally ALWAYS heals for 91HP without any variance which means you never waste power.

Hope this Helps

I think people were using the ally before because there was a big with them that made them double hit & evade attacks. I witnessed it with my young chanter and that made me use him for awhile till they fixed it. I'd hope people would realize not to use the ally anymore now that it's fixed =)

People seem to remain firmly convinced that the ally is a better meat shield. I took the information I was given from high level chanters and used it. So, for 45 levels or so, I had the wrong pet up. Hopefully, this clarifies the situation.

I don't even bother to heal.. 01/08/04 3:47 PM
I use the Compatriot all the time for solo pull-leveling, so I'm not making the ally mistake. However, I've noticed that I use up way too much mana trying to heal the pet vs just releasing it and killing it off.

Then again, I'm spec mana not enchantments.

Level 36, all into mana.
I've got MCL and Serenity 1

I toss a damage shield on the pet, run him out to round up 3 yellows, passive so he comes back to me dragging the mobs. Wait till he's at about 1/6th health left, run up, PBAOE, then quick-cast PBAOE. That 90% of the time kills all 3 mobs off. Then I release the pet if he's still alive and recast. It's allowed me to pretty much solo all the way up to 36 in a decent amount of time.

Currently I'm aiming for a level 50 template of 49 mana, 22 sun, the leftover into enchantment for the hell of it, that's like....4-5 points.

I actually wanted to discover the exact difference in power costs between resummoning a pet and healing it. When it costs 95 power to heal the pet fully, you start to wonder. It seems as though the 25% power cost for summoning is actually based on your unadjusted power (excludes accuity bonuses, power pool bonuses, and +power).

But, if you have some points in Enhancement, you use less power healing and if you resummon the pet you have to rebuff. For a Mana/Light chanter it may be worthwhile but I doubt it would be for me.
