When farming with your chanter, do you use an ally or a compatriot? It seems like most chanters I've seen use the ally, but I'm not sure why. They aren't going to be healing while they have 20 mobs on them, and most chanter farmers have a bot to heal with anyway.

If an ally is a healer and a compatriot is a tank, why don't folks use the compatriot?

Because you can put an AF buff on the Ally and not the Compatriot because he casts his own. You arent tanking when using focus really anyway. Taking hits is what its all about.

When I need to mass focus or use the shield to kill something (or mob has high defense) ally is best (this is 90% of situations) because you can put druid AF on it and it has higher value than the patirot self-buff (which doesnt stack). For mobs that I just want to beat down (SoM mobs is main one I can think of atm) I use patriot, it hits a bit harder than ally.

If a pull goes bad the ally can heal the aggro off you and back onto him. I like him because he swings faster than the compatriot, too.

If you are farming hi level mobs (artifact ML bosses etc) I would suggest using the Compatriot. Way back when I was farming Chan for Rings of Torrent I would experiment. Kill Chan using Compatriot, then Ally.

Despite having better AF and getting hit for less, the Ally appeard to have fewer HP than the Compatriot. I could tell because I would have to heal the Ally more often. The Compatriot also killed Chan must faster than the Ally.

If you are killing LOTS of meduim level mobs...the Ally might work out better.

Morrin had it right.. Heal aggro. If for some reason the mob ends up on your druidbot instead of the ally, the ally will chain-heal the druid until it gets aggro back.

In short, either works well enough.

Unless you factor ml9 in....then the friend/compatriot is best (depending on how much healing/how hard the boss hits).

I've had problems with the Ally messing up pulls when it stops to toss that health regen.

ally takes more hits while in ML9 mode
ally swings 2 times for every 1 swing a friend makes.
test it.
ally may hit for 350... but the damage is the same in the same amount of time.
friend will hit for 800 btw. tongue

And it is always nice to have a more durable pet if you have the "oh # ml9 just dropped" moment.
